School holidays can be an expensive time, but Herefordshire has a variety of free activities.
From cheese making tours to museums celebrating Herefordshire’s history. There is a lot for the children to do over the next five weeks.

1. Hereford Cathedral

Hereford Cathedral is our greatest landmark and is in the center of Hereford. It is home to a community that has worshiped and worked together for more than 1,300 years. Inside is beautiful architecture and stained glass windows. Inside, you can pay to see the Hereford Mappa Mundi – a famous unique medieval map. Admission is free.

2. The black and white village path
The black and white village path
This trail is a self-guided loop through the beautiful North Herefordshire countryside in Leominster. The journey through the different villages takes about 40 minutes. Along the way you will see various black and white mansions, open gardens and cozy tea rooms.

3. St. Mary’s Church, Ross-on-Wye

This church is an old building that has served the parish for centuries. Inside, you can see beautiful carved screens, stained glass windows, and floor tiles. A fun activity for the kids is to find all of the hedgehog carvings around the building. Sometimes you can find exhibits on local scenes and people from history.

4. Made in Ross

Made in Ross is a cooperative of local artisans who live within 20 miles of the beautiful market town of Ross-on-Wye. Entry to the Historic Market House Building and all exhibitions in the Made in Ross gallery is free.

7. Manor
Grange Court in Leominster is the seventh best place to go in Herefordshire for free
Grange Court is located in Leominster. It was built in 1633 and is the last surviving building to be built by John Abel, a local master carpenter. Today it is a community, heritage and business center owned by the residents of Leominster through the LARC Development Trust. Free entry.

8. Leominster Museum
Leominster Museum – Home of Herefordshire History
The Leominster Museum tells the story of its residents from pre-Roman times to the present day. The collection includes artifacts, photos, postcards, and documents. You can see all of this for free!

9. The Black and White House Museum

Also known as the ‘old house’, Hereford High Town referred to it as a ‘perfectly preserved half-timbered Jacobean house’. It has nearly four centuries of Hereford history and it’s free to take a tour!

10. Monkland cheese dairy

Monkland Käserei is a dairy that produces local artisanal cheeses. Currently, their tours are not available due to Covid, but there is still the option to learn how to make cheese on one of their cheese experience days, visit their shop and cafe, or stroll through their beautiful gardens. They are well signposted off the A44 on Brecon Road just outside Leominster.
