Nostalgic exhibition about life in Worcester opens

FINALLY, this week the Worcester Life Stories project team will step out from behind our computer screens to welcome the locals to a special event!

Many of you know that we launched this National Lottery funded project back in June 2020, and despite lots of online activities, photo quizzes, and loads of articles like this, we haven’t been able to meet face-to-face until now.

Last week we opened our fabulous new exhibition at the Worcester City Museum and Art Gallery, which runs until February 2022, and now this Saturday (June 26th) from 11am to 4pm we open the doors of the Guildhall and invite you to too come with and share your stories.

This special event is the first opportunity to see live demonstrations of our two new web platforms – Know Your Place Worcester, hosted by Worcester City Council and Life Stories Herefordshire and Worcestershire, hosted by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust.

The first of these, Know Your Place Worcester, is a map-based resource that provides free access to thousands of historical records, photographs, and locals’ own contributions to memories and knowledge.

We invite you to explore your surroundings through decades of historical images, street by street, and thousands of years of historical and archaeological records.

You can even add your own knowledge; be it a reminder of growing up your street, maybe the place you worked or socialized, or even a photo.

The second, Life Stories Herefordshire & Worcestershire, was developed together with the locals and allows you to create your own life story of the things, people and places that matter to you.

Users can capture their story in one easily accessible location and upload photos, videos, audio, and written reminders from their own device, Know Your Place Worcester, and other websites.

In addition to demonstrations of the two platforms, there is live music, displays, and a fantastic vintage candy store where you can swap your stories for candy!

And of course, we invite you to stroll down Worcester’s 1951 High Street, recreated by dozens of photos from the collection.

All of this is made available as part of the existing Covid-Safe measures, although the number within the building is limited, so that there may sometimes be waiting times – be patient and we look forward to seeing you.

Worcester Life Stories is a community project that brings local people together through shared stories of the city of Worcester.

It is jointly managed by Dr. Natasha Lord, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust and Sheena Payne-Lunn, Worcester City Council, managed and funded thanks to the National Lottery players.
