There was some confusion after watching a video on regional dialects that lumped Wirral together with the West Midlands.
The seven-minute YouTube clip, titled “30 Dialects of the English Language in the UK”, has been viewed over a million times – but some viewers are annoyed by the groupings.
In the video, Wirral is grouped with Cheshire, which in turn is grouped with Shropshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, and Warwickshire. For all of these areas a man with an accent in the West Midlands tells.

While the video was originally uploaded in 2015, it was recently posted on Reddit – a discussion and reviews website – yesterday and triggered that response from user ludicrous_socks. They said, “West Midlands includes Cheshire and the Wirral.
“They are definitely not in the Midlands, they are in the Northwest.
“And people definitely don’t have that accent lol.

“Tbf, the accent is different in Chester than Crewe and Wirral or Runcorn. I doubt you can put that much nuance into a 7 minute video.”
“But come on, at least do the right thing for the region if you want to bring us all together (especially if you’ve made individual counties for Devon and Sussex!).”

And not only this user is struggling with the video, many on Reddit and the original YouTube video have had serious problems displaying accents from across the UK.
Many questioned the wisdom of grouping all of Wales as the dialects are different within the country.
A YouTube user, Martin Huges, said: “I’m from North Wales, the accents are very different. Wrexham has a very distinct accent, as is the upper valley of Clwyd; Gwynedd, Caernarfon and Ynys Mon.
“Flintshire accents are Welsh, however a generation of Welsh has settled in Liverpool and the ‘Scouse’ accents have subsided. Therefore, Flintshire accents sound similar to Scouse on the surface, but they still sound very different to ‘Scouse’ to me “Accents.
“In North East Wales, native Welsh speakers don’t always sound clearer when they speak English. However, accents in North Wales are very different from variants in South Wales, as different variants of Welsh are spoken in North Wales.”
