Herefordshire Army reserve unit plants oak trees in Sennybridge

THE photo shows a group of current members of the Light Infantry and Rifles Association of Ross-on-Wye.

The association was formed in 2015 to recognize the role of former members of D Company, 6th and 5th Battalions of the Light Infantry, an Army reserve unit.

The company was related to the former Herefordshire Light Infantry.

The purpose of the association is to maintain links between former members recruited from Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire to network and support members who may have welfare issues.

Executive Vice President Colonel Bob Purvis TD said: “Our Patron is General Sir John Foley, our President is Major General Greg Smith. He’s a former company corporal, and our vice president is Colonel Andy Taylor.

“The company was small, but like many small military units, it had a large esprit de corp, and since our members are no longer spring chickens, a former Color Serjant Bob Morris had the idea of extending the company’s memory by laying the oak trees planted on Sennybridge next to the Epynt Center which explains the history of the area.”

The Epynt Center is accessible to everyone.

The association intends to monitor the establishment of the trees and will shortly place a commemorative plaque at the site.

It is also planned to plant Scots pine between the oaks.
