Herefordshire public health speaks out following a surge in Covid cases

HEREFORDSHIRE’s public health team spoke up after a large spike in coronavirus cases in one area of ​​the county.

64 new coronavirus cases have been found in Herefordshire in the past seven days, 20 more (45.5 percent) than the week before, according to Public Health England.

In the seven days leading up to April 26, the latest data available on the government’s online coronavirus dashboard, the Lugwardine, Withington and Moreton-on-Lugg area, shows the highest rate of infection in England.

The infection rate of 443.2 cases per 100,000 people is the highest of any medium super-performing areas in England, with each of those areas having around 7,000 people.

In the past week, 34 cases were reported in this area east of Hereford. That’s 30 or 750 percent more than the week before.

The Herefordshire health team has not confirmed or denied an outbreak in any situation.

Acting Director of Public Health in Herefordshire, Dr. Rebecca Howell-Jones said, “As society reopens, some increase in cases can be expected and more asymptomatic cases will be identified through regular rapid testing.

“It is likely that in environments where people are closer together, such as B. in the workplace, breakouts occur. This is why the test and trace system is important to identify potential problems and quickly take remedial action to reduce the spread.

“Our priority is to protect the health and wellbeing of all residents in our community.

“We encourage people to do their part by making sure they take the vaccine’s offer, get tested regularly, and remember their hands, face, space and fresh air.

“It is also important that workplaces maintain the safe precautions of Covid in the workplace and support workers.”

She added, “It remains important that anyone with a fever, persistent dry cough, or loss or change in their sense of taste or smell immediately isolate and call 119 or go online to arrange a Covid-19 test.”
