Herefordshire farm accident ‘worsens’ condition and fatal, investigation hears

A coroner said an injury sustained 40 years earlier on a Herefordshire farm “aggravated” a disease that resulted in the death of a man.

George Percival Goodwin, 82 years old, was living at the West Eaton Care Home in Leominster when he died in March.

OTHER NEWS:

Doctor Peter McKay said Mr. Goodwin was rushed to hospital in 1979 after being hit on the forehead by a straw that fell from an elevator on his farm in Ivington, resulting in a spinal injury.

He was treated at Smethwick Hospital, but Mr McKay said he had been left in a “partially disabled condition” for several years.

Mr. Goodwin also had a hip replacement years later.

In the years leading up to his death, Mr. Goodwin was cared for at the West Eaton Care Home.

Herefordshire Coroner Mark Bricknell recorded a narrative conclusion at Hereford Town Hall.

He gave a respiratory infection as the cause of death.

He also noted the spinal injury and the diabetes that he suffered from.

“I should be aware of his injury,” said Mr. Bricknell.

“He was 82 years old at the time of his death and the accident happened more than 40 years ago.

“He could return to light work. If his illness was not caused by chronic incapacity, it was made worse.

“He was still a farmer.”
